History
Step into the age of great discoveries with the exceptionally detailed Santa Maria model – the flagship of Christopher Columbus’s 1492 expedition that paved the way to the New World.
Of the three ships (Santa Maria, Niña and Pinta), Santa Maria was the largest, and it was aboard her that Columbus kept his journal.
The model was created based on historical accounts, archival sources, and scholarly reconstructions, faithfully reflecting the appearance of the original.
The Santa Maria was a nao-type vessel or a late caravel — a heavy merchant ship with high sides, typical of the late 15th century.
Probably built in Galicia, it had a displacement of about 100 tons and was equipped with both square and lateen sails.
During the historic 1492 voyage, led by Columbus, she reached the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola, paving the way for the colonization of the Americas.
On Christmas Eve 1492, it ran aground off the coast of Hispaniola and was lost. Her remains were used to build the settlement of La Navidad—the first European settlement in the New World.
