CSS Alabama – Confederate steam and sail sloop-of-war
CSS Alabama is the most famous warship of the American Civil War. It was a steam- and sail-powered war sloop, built in 1862 at the John Laird Sons & Co. shipyard. in Liverpool, England, commissioned by Konfederacja.
Under the command of Captain Raphael Seames, CSS Alabama carried out combat operations against Union ships in the North Atlantic and the West Indies, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy’s maritime trade.
After leaving the French port of Cherbourg, where the ship had been undergoing repairs, it was attacked by USS Kearsarge. Despite firing more shots, Alabama lost the clash to the better-armored opponent and was sunk off the coast of Cherbourg.
