About Erycin – 1882
Erycina was originally built as a cutter. She was designed by H.V. Prigg and built by W.H. Shilston, Coxside, Sutton Harbour in 1882. In 1894, she was converted into a ketch-rigged vessel. Due to her origins, Erycina has exceptionally beautiful lines, known as a “Crack Ketch,” and handles more like a racing yacht than a fishing vessel. Erycina fished off the south-west coast of Great Britain for more than 50 years, which is an exceptionally long service life for a vessel of this kind. Its overall length was 71 feet, and the length between perpendiculars was 63 feet. The hull was 17 feet 2 inches wide, making it slimmer than the average trawler, but it was built for speed and often raced in regattas against the “Crack Brixham Smack” Ibex. In 22 races at the Plymouth regatta, Erycina won 15 first places, 4 second places, and 2 third places.
