The History of Falkuša

The Falkuša, also known as the Gajeta Falkuša, was a traditional fishing boat from Komiža on the Croatian island of Vis. For centuries, it was used on fishing trips to the fishing grounds near Palagruža, about 42 miles away.

These were demanding voyages during which the boats carried salt, fishing gear, supplies, and the crew. They set sail with the help of the mistral, and the return journey often took place at night, with a favorable southerly wind.

The design of the Falkuša combined the features of a transport boat and a fishing boat. During voyages, it was equipped with high protective sides, a mast, and lateen sails. Upon reaching the fishing grounds, some of the equipment was removed so it would not interfere with working the nets.

The Falkuša was prized for its functionality, lightness, and seaworthiness. It was so practical that a crew of five could haul it ashore even in places without a safe harbor.
