Story:

HMS Indefatigable – 1794

HMS Indefatigable was one of the third-rate ships of the Ardent class, a 64-gun ship of the line designed by Sir Thomas Slade in 1761 for the Royal Navy. It was the first ship in the British Navy to bear that name. Although originally built as a ship of the line, she spent most of her service after being converted into a razee frigate (44 guns). He had a long career under the command of many distinguished officers, serving during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He sank a total of 27 vessels—single-handedly or as part of a flotilla—and the Admiralty awarded four clasps to the Naval General Service Medal to members of his crew for their participation in specific actions.

Indefatigable was finally retired from service in 1815 and broken up at Sheerness in August 1816.

C.S. Forester chose Indefatigable as the ship on which his fictional hero Horatio Hornblower spends most of his time as a midshipman in the novel Mr. Midshipman Hornblower. The incident involving the Spanish flotilla was also mentioned by Forrester in the novel Hornblower and the Hotspur. Indefatigable appears even more frequently in the Hornblower television series. Patrick O’Brian also mentions this incident in his novel Post Captain, in which Captain Aubrey temporarily commands HMS Lively, one of the other ships in Moore’s British squadron. The ship is also mentioned in The Yellow Admiral in the context of its conversion from a two-decker.
