HMS Sphinx – 1775 – Vanguard Models

This is the latest release from the Vanguard Models range. This is the most comprehensive design, featuring a large number of pre-cut and engraved parts spread across 33 sheets, mainly made of pear wood, with high-quality MDF used for the frame. The laser-cut decks are made from maple plywood, and we also include plywood deck templates for the superstructure and stern in case you would like to make the deck yourself (decking material is not included in this option). Walnut wooden dowel supplied for masts and side masts. It is estimated that building this model, designed for advanced modelers, will take an average of 400 to 800 hours.

The set includes:

• Laser-cut MDF parts and transparent acetate for the gallery windows. All visible parts are cut from pear wood sheets.

• Laser-cut wooden ladders and pearwood grilles, included as standard.

• Laser-cut and engraved maple deck with nail detailing.

• All areas at deck level and above are factory-cut. Even the main shafts are cut.

• 5 sheets of photo-etched brass.

• High-resolution 3D-printed barrels for 9-pounder guns (black), complete with black acrylic cannonballs.

• The stake pocket positions are built into the frame, with the inner and outer side panels cut out in the corresponding places.

• Double-planked deck, using limewood for the first deck layer and pearwood for the second layer.

• All decks above the shafts are supplied as pre-cut and engraved sections.

• Walnut wooden peg for masts and side masts.

• Multiple sizes of black and natural rigging thread, along with all the necessary blocks and eyelets.

• The complete, full-color instruction manual is our most detailed version, including TWENTY-THREE sheets of plans featuring all mast and rigging drawings.

• Highly detailed resin stern decoration and a 3D-printed Sphinx figure.

• 3D-printed stern lanterns with glazing.

• Three highly detailed ship boats made from pear wood.

• Aft cabins with engraved checkerboard flooring.

• Small black headset chain.

• Highly detailed ship’s stove and brick base.

• Each Sphinx set takes 8 full hours to produce.

HMS Sphinx

HMS Sphinx was a ship that served in the Royal Navy of Great Britain. It was built in 1775 as a 32-gun Fifth-rate warship, meaning it was a medium-sized naval vessel used mainly for escort, reconnaissance, and support operations.

HMS Sphinx took part in many campaigns, including during the American War of Independence and the Napoleonic Wars. Its history spans both operations in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Caribbean region.

The ship was decommissioned at the beginning of the 19th century and was ultimately sold in 1826. Its name was also later used in the Royal Navy for other ships, but the original HMS Sphinx from 1775 was one of the key warships of its era.
