The liburna is a light, fast oared warship used by the Illyrians from the 8th to the 1st century BC. Its name comes from the Liburnians, who were the first to develop this versatile vessel. Liburnians gained great fame thanks to their maneuverability and speed, which gave them an advantage, among other things. in the famous Battle of Actium (31 BC).
Their effectiveness led to their adoption by the Romans as basic warship units – over time, the name “liburna” became synonymous with a warship in Europe. Although many sources also refer to later biremes and triremes as liburnians, the true Liburna is this classic single-oared version – the monoreme.
