18th Century Longboat – 18th-century ship’s boat
The longboat was the largest ship’s boat carried aboard an 18th-century sailing vessel. It served as the primary lifeboat and was also used to transport supplies, water barrels, and people between the ship and the shore. It was always kept fully ready in case of an emergency.
The carvel-built construction (flush-fitted planks), along with the full bow and high sides, ensured excellent seaworthiness even in strong winds and heavy seas. Inside, there were benches for 8–10 rowers. Many longboats were fitted with a removable mast and sail, and some could carry a cannon mounted at the bow.
The model designed by Chuck Passaro is an accurate replica built using plank-on-frame construction – just like real period launches.
