Step into the golden age of trade and maritime power in the Mediterranean
A museum-class wooden model of a Ragusan galleon, created for advanced modelers, collectors, and enthusiasts of maritime history. Argosy combines historical elegance with practical naval architecture — a historically accurate model that is visually striking and technically demanding.
About the galleon and the Ragusan “Argosy”
The galleon was a groundbreaking sailing ship of the 16th and 17th centuries, serving as a structural bridge between galleasses and the later ships of the line.
- Origin: designed for long ocean voyages that smaller, transitional vessels were unable to handle.
- Construction: high sides, an elongated hull, a square stern, and a prominent forecastle. A figurehead was often placed at the bow, and the rigging combined square sails on the foremast and mainmast with a lateen sail on the mizzenmast.
- Function: the first galleons were primarily warships; later they were converted into transport vessels used for overseas trade.
The Ragusan Argosy stood out from other galleons. The Republic of Dubrovnik used it for trading voyages and for transporting silver from Peru and Mexico. It was renowned for its speed, maneuverability, and elegance — in fact, the English word “argosy” (a richly laden merchant ship) comes from it.
Historical significance
Dubrovnik merchant galleons sailed in squadrons, protecting valuable cargo. Argosy combines historical elegance with functional naval architecture. The model continues the museum series of Dubrovnik ships by Maris Stella, following the successful models of the Ragusan carrack and 16th-century cog.
