“Nef from Winchelsea” — New Model by “Ships of Pavel Nikitin”
We are proud to present a new design from “Ships of Pavel Nikitin” — a self-assembly ship model kit, “Nef of Winchelsea”.
This vessel, dating from the 13th–14th century, was part of the Cinque Ports fleet—one of the key military and trade alliances of medieval England. The Confederation played a huge role in defending the coast and developing trade, and vessels such as “Nef” formed the backbone of its naval forces.
The “Nef of Winchelsea” project is a natural continuation of the 1:32 scale series, complementing the existing “Oseberg” Viking boat kit.
The reconstruction was based on the municipal seal of Winchelsea, which depicts a similar ship. The designers — Yevgeny Troppmann and Pavel Nikitin — based their work on the research of Werner Zimmermann, von Fircks, and Werner Dammann. Despite the limited number of original sources, the designers made every effort to capture the spirit of the era and recreate as faithfully as possible the appearance of a typical unit from that period.
The “Nef z Winchelsea” model was designed with exceptional precision and respect for historical authenticity. Every detail — from the hull architecture to the smallest fittings — has been crafted with the utmost care. The model’s scale has been matched to the “Oseberg” set, making it possible to create a cohesive collection of ships from different eras.
Thanks to its high-quality craftsmanship, exceptional attention to detail, and carefully selected materials, this model is a true work of art in the world of ship modeling. The “Nef z Winchelsea” is more than just a set — it’s a journey through time that lets you experience the history of bold sailors and the great maritime powers of the past.
Historical background
A nef is a type of ship widely used in Western Europe from the 12th to the 14th century. These were multipurpose vessels, combining the functions of merchant and war ships.
Winchelsea, located on the south coast of England, was a key member of the famous Cinque Ports Confederation — an alliance of five ports granted special privileges by the Crown in return for military support and maritime protection.
Ships such as the “Nef of Winchelsea” were designed with high fore and aft castles, which made them easier to defend. Their flat bottoms allowed for easy loading and unloading in shallow ports.
The model is based on the depiction from the city seal and supplemented with the findings of leading historians of shipbuilding. Although few archaeological finds remain, the project’s creators ensured the reconstruction was as faithful as possible.
