The Novilara model depicts a type of vessel that sailed the Adriatic as early as 600 years before our era. These ships were used for both trade and warfare by the Piceni and Liburnian peoples, and were built in the areas of present-day Zadar, Rijeka, and Novilara on the Italian side of the Adriatic.
This historical pattern was recreated from a colored engraving found on the tombstone of Novilara (Pesaro), depicting a naval battle between the fleet of Novilara and the Liburnians. The ship’s distinctive bow design—the ram (rostrum)—was used both to quickly beach the vessel and to pierce the hulls of enemy ships.
The illustration on the tombstone also shows something exceptional: a rope attached to the stern rudder, which was only confirmed in sources in the 15th century, making it a unique feature of the early development of seafaring.
