What were the ships of the great discovery of the New World? Tradition always speaks of three caravels – fast, lightweight vessels with several masts and varied sail configurations. However, researchers point out that in reality Columbus’s fleet consisted of two caravels—Niña and Pinta—and one “Nao,” Santa María, a three-masted ship with two square sails and one lateen sail, equipped with a forecastle, which more properly classifies it as a carrack. The sturdy construction, combined with the maritime knowledge of the time and the experience of a great sailor, made it possible to carry out such a bold undertaking. The year 1492 is a historic date known all over the world.
