After the War of Independence, when Spain lost its colonies in America, the merchant fleet had almost completely disappeared from the peninsula, leaving only small coastal sailing vessels to re-establish routes to the Antilles.
By royal decree issued by Charles III, trade was resumed with those colonies that remained loyal, and the felucca “San Juan” (El Glorioso) made the first voyage.
