For centuries, the legend of the Flying Dutchman has captured the imagination. The tale tells of the shadows of the damned—a ship and its crew, condemned to wander the world’s oceans forever, unable to reach land. All because of the captain’s disastrous decision to sail through treacherous waters. This legend inspired many playwrights, poets, and painters. It also became part of the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, where the ship is known simply as the Dutchman and sails under the command of the fictional Captain Davy Jones.
