In 1845, under the command of Sir John A. Franklin, the ships Terror and Erebus set out on an expedition to conquer the famous Northwest Passage. These were the first ships equipped with auxiliary steam engines, as well as reinforced with iron plates at the bow and stern to improve their resistance to pack ice. They were stocked with supplies sufficient for 3 years at sea.
The two ships were last seen off the coast of Greenland as they entered Baffin Bay — the gateway to the frozen labyrinth of the Arctic.
Thanks to collaboration with an Inuit hunter from the Arctic settlement of Gjoa Haven, the wreck of HMS Terror was finally discovered on September 26, 2016, 168 years after it went missing. The Terror was in excellent condition. Images of its deck and interior were successfully captured, revealing perfectly preserved objects and parts of the ship that remained untouched.
The mystery of Franklin’s tragic expedition remains unsolved to this day, although there is hope that archaeological investigations of the wreck will help shed some light on what happened.
