The trabakul, also known as trabakula or trabakuo, is a typical two-masted Italian-Croatian sailing vessel used mainly along the Adriatic coast—rarely found beyond the Strait of Otranto. The name comes from the Arabic tabaquah – roof, referring to its distinctive shape.
It was a vessel intended exclusively for transporting goods—simple in design, easy to operate, and easy to maintain. Regarded as the successor to the ancient navis rotunda, the rounded ships of Roman times. The vessel was up to 30 metres long, up to 6 metres wide, and had a carrying capacity of 60 to 200 tonnes.
