Viking Knarr – a Viking merchant ship of the Skuldelev 1 type
Knarr is a type of Viking sailing ship used for long-distance trading voyages. Unlike long warships, Knarrs were sturdier and more stable, making them ideal for open-sea sailing, even in harsh conditions.
The featured model is based on a vessel discovered near the town of Skuldelev in Denmark, known as Skuldelev 1. The original ship was built in Norway between 1030 and 1050, mainly from oak and pine wood.
The vessel was approximately 16.3 meters long and had a displacement of nearly 24 tons. Knarrs were a key element in the development of trade and colonization carried out by the Vikings.
