Vessel history
In 1596–1597, Willem Barentsz set out on his third expedition in search of the Northeast Passage. The expedition sailed on two small sailing ships under the command of Jacob van Heemskerck and Jan Rijp; Barentsz served as navigator. During the cruise, among other things, the following were discovered. Bjørnøya (Wyspę Niedźwiedzią) i archipelag Svalbard/Spitsbergen, a następnie statek Barentsza został uwięziony w lodach u wybrzeży Nowej Ziemi. The crew wintered in a shelter built from wood and parts of the ship (Het Behouden Huys). Barentsz died on the return journey in June 1597. The expedition became one of the milestones in the history of European Arctic exploration.
